Journalism needs a new style guide for these times. As a start: if the basic material facts of the situation don’t align whatsoever with the official claim, you don’t have to repeat that claim. You are not mandated to cover the lies meant to obscure the facts, only the facts themselves.

People who have some actual understanding of tariffs and the economy have been saying this for the last 1.5 to 2 years. Just like they said it 4 years ago. Ignorance is not an acceptable substitute for competence.

This US government shutdown is different: what it means for science President Trump’s budget office lays out guidelines for mass lay-offs across the federal government.

β€œAmerican science, the gold-standard and world-leading science and innovation enterprise, is being destroyed….Congress has a rare moment of leverage to check Trump’s executive overreach and it must stand up and do so.”

Angus: American farmers who bought into Trump, thinking tariffs would help themβ€”their markets are gone. Canada’s not making noise about it; we’re just moving in. Canadian corn is now being sold in Ireland, Spain, and the UK. Those used to be guaranteed American markets. Not anymore.

Let’s quit throwing good money after bad. Coal’s relevance as an economic force and energy source is rapidly fading. Let’s invest that money in building clean energy infrastructure. If done right, coal workers could work in clean energy.

Step 1 is to pull our heads out. Simple, right?

What Extreme Poverty Looks Like Ten percent of humanity struggles to live on under $2 a day. That, and the gap between the extremely poor and the more privileged, is important to see.

Nearly 10% of humanity (~800M people in 2025) struggles to live on less than $3 a day. It’s important for Americans to appreciate that reality β€” and the growing gap between the extremely poor & the extremely privileged β€” because, as USAID demonstrated, our nation has the power to change it.

This is Cruiser. He's trained as a Community Resource Dog in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Last week he helped locate a missing elderly resident with dementia who had wandered away from home. For a job well done, Cruiser was rewarded with a hamburger. 14/10 (IG: officer_cruiser)

The government of the United States, which is controlled by Donald Trump in the presidency, Republicans in the Senate, and Republicans in the House, will shut down in a few hours.

It is the first shutdown since the last time Trump was president and he shut down the government.

Regular reminder that Members of Congress still get paid during a shut down.

The folks who work in their offices, who clean and guard the building do not.

I'm not a political genius, but I'm pretty sure the party that published a 600-page manifesto on how they want to shut down the federal government are the ones who shut down the federal government.
