Certainly part of it, but the immediate reflex of “—and this is why Bluesky is a joke” feels insanely dismissive and feels part of a different conversation being had elsewhere (obviously). Also provokes a nastier conversation in many cases.

And to the second point specifically: People can tell when something feels coordinated or otherwise defensive, and it gets frustrating to see legitimately bad conduct/behavior defended by focusing on the site as a whole. And that’s where it comes off as almost clique-y

Fair points on both. My follow up post was more towards those who have left almost completely in light of said criticism. There‘s something about actively choosing Twitter over here that doesn’t make sense if the community backlash is what bothers them.

I was on Twitter for over a decade, dealt with Facebook for my career for a long time, etc. I truly cannot empathize with those who find Bluesky somehow more abrasive than other sites. It just isn’t!

I think it’s notable that a sticking point with many of these journalists is that their friends get a hostile reception. I don’t know who broadcast Bluesky as a haven from criticism or social media frenzies, but I guess if you come in with that expectation, you get very bitter when it‘s not met.

You’ll probably just brush off this reply as “Blueskyism” but watching you go down this path really sucks man. I used to be in journalism and I cannot overstate how screwed the industry is for the future in all categories. It’s cutthroat corporate culture mixed with nepotism but no one gets paid all that much so a lot of people left in it are just awful.
