I have been wanting to attempt making a parasol, but haven't worked up the courage

Rewatched Encounter at Farpoint yesterday, and I was struck by how when we first encounter Dr. Crusher, she's buying fabric. How nice it is to think that in an age of replicators and other such technological magic, folks would still be engaging in the act of sewing.

I hate cutting out patterns. It isn't fun for me and it makes my back hurt. I often end up spreading the cutting over a few days. Good job cutting out 3 projects!

I usually assume that a garment project is going to be spread over at least 3 or 4 active (cutting, marking, sewing) days, with an unknown number of inactive days between.

It was a surprising realization

I have lots! Spinning yarn, knitting, weaving, sewing, leatherwork, basic electronics, cooking, etc.

But I'm also chronically ill and have very poor vision, so once I run out of meds or my glasses get broken, I'm screwed.

I was looking at vintage sewing machines on eBay and realized that my Kenmore sewing machine, which was my first big adult purchase, is now a vintage machine.

Creative reuse stores are also a great resource for supplies and yarn if you have one near you.

Yesterday I sewed a quick pen holder for my big notebook.

I'm not sure I could resist doing every piece from a different color.

I'm thinking about cutting the shape out of wood, that way I can use starch and an iron to force it into shape after I do the sewing. In theory.

I think I need a form to shape it over. Trying to do it freehand isn't working.

Everytime I make bias binding I make way more than I need, because it could come in handy some day. I figure that if I like a fabric well enough to decide to make binding, I will use it again.

Grey straw braid that is sewn into a spiral pattern to make a flat disk that will be the crown of a hat. It is a background of dark grey with a 1 inch ruler grid pattern in white.

I bought a hat at the thrift store, took it apart, and now I'm trying to turn it into a different hat. My goal is a boater, but I need to figure out how to make the hat crown go up.

They are fairly inexpensive at hardware stores, but I don't go to hardware stores very often.

The worst! I keep meaning to get one of those extendable magnet wands, but haven't actually gotten one yet.

That jacket is so cool. I love dyeing, but haven't tried cyanotype yet.

My current favorite is Alchemist. I dyed a cotton jacket for my mom with it and it ended up looking like an impressionist painting of a garden.

It is so much fun! I treated myself to some of Dharma's ice Dye colors late last year and have been having fun with them.

But the tiny stitches look so good when you don't have to rip it out.

Great job! I've been sewing on a machine for almost 25 years and I still regularly end up sewing something the wrong way out.
