White-backed vultures are sometimes hunted for traditional medicine and belief practices, and they are also victims of illegal trade. Climate change and potential food scarcity due to habitat loss and other factors also contribute to the decline. The White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) is a Sub-Saharan African vultures species occurring from Mauritania east to Sudan and Ethiopia and south to northern and eastern South Africa.

The White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) is classified as critically endangered. This is due to a rapid and severe population decline primarily driven by poisoning from diclofenac, a drug used in livestock.They are also victims of illegal trade.
