It all started a couple of years ago in a discussion with Mario Mencia about proton transfer in bacterial membranes vs. archaeal ones. I told him we can give it a go, and we found some interesting, unexpected capability of ether lipids to support proton diffusion.

A Molecular Donor-Acceptor System to Induce and Visualize Proton Transfer Across Biomolecules Proton transfer (PT) is at the heart of fundamental natural biochemical reactions, e.g. in bioenergetics, where proteins are the main proton mediators. PT between two specific points requires a change...

I have never been so excited about a Preprint @chemrxiv.bsky.social. An idea started 10 years ago, and experiments started nearly 8 years ago, we finally present the first-ever Donor-Bridge-Acceptor system to initiate and explore proton transfer across biomolecules.
