Well, I'd say that science itself is about asking and answering questions, so if the media leans away from explaining or exploring the science, I would consider it "less" sci-fi and closer to plain fiction. Which isn't to say Star Wars "isn't" sci-fi, but I'd argue Jurassic Park is "more" sci-fi.
