The RenCen lower level pedestal as seen from the glass circulation ring above, formerly GM World and the food court. All escalators are barricaded and the showfloor curtains are permanently shut. The cars and public displays have all been removed.

I had a work meeting inside the RenCen today, my first and probably only visit this year. As of last month it's no longer a public space – have to state your business to security to access the pedestal.

Cars are gone, screens are off, ambient music is no more. An eerie and bittersweet farewell

On the zoning reform package: As someone who's now firmly priced out of the outer-ring Oakland County suburb he called home as a student, I am in full support of a top-down approach to reign in land use and new housing developments, but HOO BOY are some local political fireworks about to fly 🍿

Beyond that, "Our laws have made it easy to expand suburbs but hard to build walkable downtowns" was as close to "more transit, less highway expansion" as we could've hoped to get tonight. I invite our next governor to adopt this policy without reservation

Credit where it's due: She said "I have your back and will protect you" out loud to Michigan's trans residents this time. That was good to hear.
