The federal government is at war with TPS itself. On Monday, it moved to strip nationals from Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua of the right to live and work here. The National TPS Alliance (NTPSA) and seven individual plaintiffs are suing the administration.

This new resource offers ways that individuals, organizations, and the California Attorney General can uphold SB54’s promise to protect the rights of California’s immigrant communities and enhance public safety for all Californians.

In the face of resistance to SB 54 from local jurisdictions and threats from the federal government, the need to uphold and enforce the law has never been more urgent.

Enacted in 2017, the California Values Act (SB 54) restricts the use of local and state law enforcement resources for cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

CILP has worked alongside some of those young immigrants as they push for greater equity in education. Both the Opportunity for All campaign and a 2024 lawsuit seek to end those discriminatory policies that prevent many immigrant youth from pursuing higher education.

Discriminatory university and college policies bar them from accessing on-campus work and research positions. This means many immigrant students must choose between college and working to keep a roof over their head and food on the table.

Legal challenges to DACA have left many of those young undocumented immigrants unable to benefit from the protections and opportunities provided by the 2012 initiative.
For those young undocumented immigrants, the promise of Plyler and DACA remains elusive.

Both Plyler and DACA ensured generations of young immigrants who came to this country without legal status were able to pursue an education. But much remains to be done.

We also mark the 13th anniversary of DACA and honor the undocumented immigrant youth who fought for and won this critical policy that has provided relief to so many undocumented young people who came to the United States as children.

This June 15th, we celebrate 43rd anniversary of Plyler v. Doe, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that guaranteed every child the right to a K-12 public education, regardless of his or her immigration status.
