Our unhoused neighbors really need the support of all in the community, now more than ever. Show up for your unhoused neighbors, whether that be providing a meal, supplies, cash, or just a chat. Mutual aid is a great way to build community and provide tangible assistance to those who need it.

We got to share a Greek pasta salad, pizza, grilled hot dogs and some delicious Khichdi with our neighbors, as well as an array of snacks and drinks. Thanks to generous donations we had canned goods, hygiene products, and period packs to distribute, in addition to our usual request fulfillments.

The temperatures have been more bearable the last few weeks, but with the increase in sweeps and pressure from police, demand is as high as ever.

Please be kind to your neighbors, look out for each other, and stay safe. 🖤

As a result, our neighbors lose valuable possessions. Tents, sleeping bags, clothing and hygiene supplies need constant replacing.

People deserve to feel safe and secure where they're staying, and not at constant risk of upheaval.

Although we work hard to get people the basic supplies they need to make life a little easier, conditions are getting worse for folks. Police and business owners alike continue to harass our neighbors, forcing people to constantly relocate.

Huge thank you to the people and orgs that helped us out with our July hygiene supply drive, especially Urban Abbey for running a supply drive for us! This is what we collected from the drive:

We ended July with a hotdog grill-out, turkey sandwiches, homemade meatloaf and plenty of snacks and veg from folks' gardens. In August, we had enchilada casserole, a ton of salad, chicken salad sandwiches, and pizza.

We’ve been busy at Street Kitchen this summer! Here's a lil recap of the last couple months:

July was HOT. In addition to our usual supplies at kitchen, a few members went around the community to distribute water and electrolytes to folks who needed it.

We are so honored for the opportunity to work with these incredible kids again, and so grateful to @urbanabbey.bsky.social for their continued partnership. If you'd like to help us continue to make care packages and support our neighbors, you can drop off hygiene supplies at Urban Abbey.

OAA had the pleasure of meeting with Urban Abbey's youth group for a second time recently. We had great conversations about the spectrum from charity to mutual aid, heard some absolutely inspired ideas for mutual aid projects, and put together at least 30 care packages, each featuring incredible

As some may have seen, there's been an increased number of encampment sweeps in our community. These sweeps only cause fear, uncertainty, and instability. As they happen, people lose essential items and have to constantly rebuild.

As we get deeper into summer, preventing heat illness is more important than ever. Every week we provide water, cool rags, ice and other essentials to those who stop by Street Kitchen.

Despite the heat, the past two weeks have been busy! We got to share smoked chicken, a few different salads, and plenty of snacks and sides with our neighbors.

If you are interested and able to chip in, every dollar counts. All donations we receive go directly back to providing for our neighbors. It would be incredible if we could meet even more of the need that exists in our community.

You ensure we have steady funds to get people what they need to survive, and we’re honored that we’ve been able to continue doing this work for four years now!

However, requests are also one of the most costly things we provide, at approximately $400-500 for a single week of requests, and we’re forced to limit them to every other week at the most. Many thanks to our Patreon subscribers and everyone who donates to make that possible.

We believe people should be able to access what they need, not just what we have on hand. Our unhoused neighbors ask for all kinds of things–tents, propane, a dog leash, coloring books, work boots, and so many other things that make life a little more bearable.

As the weather has improved, we’ve expanded what we do at Street Kitchen–we’ve helped with clothing mending and have games or other things for folks to do while we chat and share a meal every week.

Requests remain one of the core parts of Street Kitchen.
