Media Do's known for using AI translations, which is bad enough. But the egregious misuse of quotation marks on their English site tells me a lot about what they think of actual translators and our expertise. "Human resources", indeed.

sooo the claim that it takes 5-6 months for a human to translate a manga is bullshit.

It only takes me a few days--then ideally I wait a few days to reread the translation with a fresh mind and fix any errors and tweak the wording. So like, a week total. For quality, human work.

You know how Joe Rogan can have leading experts patiently and personally explain basically anything he wants, but the moment you turn your back on him, he's back to gorging at the information garbage can?

There's a special oppositional-defiant strain of dumbass that is worse than neutral.

So apparently Seven Seas had a panel at CitrusCon earlier today, where the reps talked about how proud they were to be independently owned... and then literally an hour after the panel ended the Media Go purchase news went live.

I thought I remembered some talk of them flirting with AI...

It's so goddamn PRETTY.

I'd be more inclined to believe that Graham Platner is merely a dumbass if he was making different kinds of "mistakes" instead of one very specific type of "mistake" over and over

I'm also concerned for the state of their employee union (although considering how I've heard nothing about it in years, I have no idea what the state of that thing is at this point).

I just don't like the look of more Japanese corporations coming to tell us what THEY think we should have and buy.

I sincerely could not tell you where they go from here.

One of the unique qualities about Seven Seas was that since they were independent, they could pick and choose as they pleased as far as whose books they published.

Once the Japanese pubs get involved, that's not so much of an option anymore.

It definitely suggests that the licensing spree that Seven Seas has been on for years at this point has come at an unsustainable cost.

I'm also not happy to see that it's Media Do doing the buying, considering how lackluster their online offerings had been.

This does not feel like an encouraging sign, for one of the few US manga publishers to not be just a branch of a larger Japanese one to become precisely that.

It's possibly one of the best illustrations of the Surf Dracula principle in action, in that it takes LITERALLY AN HOUR AND A HALF for the title character (whose literal last name is Steam!) to put on a flight suit and start zooming around with steam...only to achieve nothing of consequence.

It came out when I was in college, long before I was into anime, and I too remember the hype...and the disappointment.

There are some good ideas here, but a lot of them were done better in slightly earlier works like Turn A Gundam or Rintaro's Metropolis.

In many ways, Otomo pulled a Lucas with Steamboy - its expectations were too high to ever meet, and no one had the authority or will to tell him 'no' on anything.

The characters are shallow, the pacing is dreadful (complete with a horribly dragged out third act that takes up literally half of this 2 hr film), the color palette is drab (not helped by a dank DVD transfer), and the only person less consequential than the spoiled ojou-sama is the title character.

So I have finally seen Steamboy...and boy does it live up to its reputation.

In many ways it's a technical marvel, but everything aside from the animation is deeply, deeply flawed.
