Does anyone know if United Workers of Seven Seas (UW7S) is still a recognized union? Their website is gone and they haven't updated their socials in a few years. I would love to know their thoughts on the merger.

Just from other instances of negligence I've seen Yumi Tamura talk about how the wage gaps between their editorial departments for shoujo mangaka. Since she works for Shogakukan and has since debut this is most likely just in regards to their company (but could be a general publisher stance)

Shogakukan has a fucking history of mistreating their artists and willingly allowing TWO WHOLE PEDOPHILES back to their company is not surprising with how little these people seem to care about the well being of anyone around them but themselves

Nope, the late Hinako Ashihara published primarily in Shogakukan magazines. Hell, she had won the Shogakukan Manga Award twice!

A heads up that the Polygon article (and others in Japanese) about the horrible case coming out of Shogakukan is full of bad information, like conflating a civil and criminal case.

I'm sure this will cause zero issues when talking about the situation moving forward.

Like I really don’t think people appreciate how much work you need to find every year as a freelance TL to make anything resembling a livable wage with the rates where they are rn. To hit the median US income on pretty typical manga rates you’d have to get about *50 volumes* a year

I think I found where the 6 months claim comes from, and it's not just for TL... but they are still completely misunderstanding the process and thinking we spend WAY more time TLing (8 weeks?!) and deciding terminology/etc (4 weeks?!) than we actually do. Do they actually talk to any translators?
