Notes have been in the (broadly) Western canon counted inclusively - the 1st is the root. In diatonic systems the eighth note completes the cycle and is both the last and first notes. Not the best term. Ancient Greeks called it a diapason, which is way cooler but I havenโ€™t managed to revive it.
