I was reading last night about the Cobden-Sanderson/Walker feud, that ended with C-S dumping all the Doves type in the Thames; mostly seems like the feud began because C-S felt he was doing more work than Walker on the press πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

The world continues to get stranger and stranger; here we have discussion of the work of Stanley Morison on a national news broadcaster in 2025. It’s nice to hear things like letterspacing discussed so publicly, but I do wish the world was a little less insane

I think maybe they just looked up generation definitions from a source that was 10 years old lol

There’s a lot to unpack here tbh

I’m also a bit annoyed by β€˜red head’ when they mean β€˜redhead’

I have a lot of questions about this. First up is I’m older than 35 and I’m absolutely not Gen X 🀨

I’m a little sad I don’t live in a time when a university press can operate from an enormous ostentatious pilastered building on Madison Avenue πŸ˜”

I know that feeling! My worry is how to respond, like I genuinely can’t thank them enough haha

I always wondered what happened to that edition!

That's supposed to put people off going there, right?

Why in god’s name would anyone even consider embedding β€˜AI’ in the REF? Like why would this thought even occur in the first place? Something would have to be extremely wrong with the brain that came up with that

Absolutely. Hiring a professional proofreader is usually not allowed at UG level, so why should a (much lower quality) robot version be allowed?

I thought the same. This new-fangled field everyone’s talking about..!

And, quite frankly, further evidence that they should never have made a Th ligature in the first place... πŸ˜„

04.12.2025 17:57 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Hah, they do not! Well Minion Pro doesn't. Which is a little odd because it is a typeface that attempts to cover all languages. Though how often is TΓΎ gonna come up πŸ˜›

04.12.2025 14:51 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes a ligature; the second one in the list is the first with ligatures turned off (but just for the Th, not the ffl; I was testing whether I could do that!)
Robert Slimbach clearly changed his mind about it, cause he introduced it in Minion Pro but then removed it in Minion 3 (which I recommend btw)

Hello everyone, what do you think about the Th ligature? I'm starting to quite dislike it.

Top to bottom (all Adobe): 1. Caslon, 2. Caslon with ligature switched off for Th, kerning -20, 3. Aldine, 4. Minion 3, 5. Minion Pro

(The more I look at it the less any of them look right?!)

It's horrifying beyond belief, the consequences of this are going to be truly devastating, and felt for many years

I got a really rude reply to a totally reasonable email from a large US university press a couple of weeks ago, and it's made me reluctant to engage with the press in any way. Silly, of course. But the lack of solidarity was really something.

There was a bit of this sort of thing in the Lord Mayor's procession in London the other day, all the still-extant guilds etc. were there. I only caught a bit of it but there was a giant inflatable joint of lamb.
