My hot Thanksgiving take: Whatever you eat or do to celebrate Thanksgiving is fine, so long as it makes you and yours happy and does not harm another. Love pie? Have two. Hate pie? Eat cake.
Just be good to each other.

I think about this one a lot
I think it is field dependent. It wasnβt done in chemistry when I was interviewing in 2000. When I heard about it from a colleague in another dependent I couldnβt believe it. But it was really true. Just staggering.
17.11.2025 02:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thatβs awesome! How have I never heard of this? Thanks.

14.11.2025 22:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Basic light pollution diagram showing four different streetlight set ups ranging from more light pollution on the left to less light pollution on the right. The most pollution option, labelled "very bad" is a street lamp with a round uncovered bulb on top, making a sphere of light in the air. The next option, labelled "bad" has a tiny cap on top, that limits the upward pollution a bit. The "better" option is mostly uncovered on top, limiting pollution above the streetlight. The final option, labelled "best" has a full shroud overtop, limiting the light to only below the streetlight, where it is needed for pedestrians and vehicles.
Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"
guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation
I should add. I saw lady spring and fall from NC. May 2024 was bright naked eye with some color (and covered the whole sky). October was barely visible. This was both from a relatively dark site. Sadly, I missed this weekβs show.

13.11.2025 11:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβve tried to find anyone who saw both May 10, 2024 Aurora and last nightβs for comparison. Havenβt seen any one directly compare them.

02.11.2025 03:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 02025 now tied for longest WS in history in number of innings with 1919.
02.11.2025 03:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The 2025 World Series will see more innings than any series since 1921 (Giants 5-3 win in best of 9). The only series with more innings was 1919 (Reds 5-3 win with one 10 inning game). 11 innings tomorrow gets us the longest series in history. #baseball #worldseries
01.11.2025 04:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ha. We did it by winning some fluky close games, having the usual conference powers suck and playing the title game in the rain. Alas, not a repeatable formula (as we showed).

25.10.2025 14:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I sure hope so. But I also have a bad feeling. Iβm hoping that bad feeling comes from all the rest of the news and not logic.

17.10.2025 03:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Same. But the way I figure it is, no one learns something fully and deeply the first (or even tenth) time they see it. In the beginning facts have to get wedged in heads so that they can illuminate when the matter is taken up again down the road.

13.10.2025 16:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Almost everyone assumes that βmore lightβ is always the answer. The world therefore gets both brighter and harder to navigate at night.

02.10.2025 11:52 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think true in every field. Ideas are easy. Deciding which are good and executing the work are hard. Which is why highly paid (and usually self-proclaimed) βidea menβ piss me off so much.
