I personally have a massive problem with the fanfic = wish-fulfillment thing because that's exactly the assumption that got me attacked so many times for writing stories where bad things happen.

I guess a bonus of first person is it reduces the "big pile of identical pronouns" issue!

i think the trouble with most oft-repeated writing advice is that it's purely subtractive. new writers get ideas like "show don't tell" or "don't use adverbs" or "avoid repetition" drilled in & come to view writing as joyless violence where you gouge out chunks of your own art for unclear reasons

I have never in my life read or written a fanfic that's first person.
