Like they're a great drafting tool but I'm now making an effort to look at a sentence like "he's throbbing, pulsating, aching" and be like no Rogue you need to pick the one that matters most here.

I think the groups of 3 is the big one. There's nothing wrong with them as such and they have a time and a place but I suspect most of the time I was using them to give myself multiple shots at getting the point I wanted to make across rather than taking the time to pick the word I really meant.

In general, it's made me give up on relying on a lot of snappy little sentences to give my writing clarity. Being clear without them takes a hell of a lot more considered effort, that's for damn sure, but you know what I think it's doing me good.

I never really did the "not x but y" thing or the Honestly? thing, which are the two most obvious tells now.

It's encouraged me to go harder into making sure I include a variety of longer, more complex sentence structures so there is more of an emphasis on fluidity than punchiness. There definitely common adjectives I try to avoid and replace now too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I do! Of course all of them are on the "be very careful about overuse" list rather than "never use at all" (with the exception of — spaced em-dashes—which are just wrong I'm sorry). Groups of 3 and reliance on single short-sentence paragraphs for emphasis are the main two I was definitely guilty of.
