This is basically Benjamin of Tudela's main interest in his travelogue from the 12th C!

We had a professor in history do this for a couple of semesters and it worked well for her, but no one else followed suit (self included). I was scared about the pushback, even though it went well for her. (She ended up leaving, IDK if she took the practice with her.)

It's incredible that he got his fame/blogger start by literally Skyping random Iraqis, hoping they would answer, and then chatting with them about how things were going. A technological impossibility just a few years earlier and a different kind of impossibility just a few years later.

The RIAA was suing teenagers. We had to sit through ⬇️ this shit anytime we wanted to watch a DVD. A whole generation shamed for using Limewire and torrents. Only for these silicone valley assholes to now find copyright infringement a necessary evil they shouldn’t have to answer for

I really feel like millennials especially resent the copyright theft part of these AI data centers because of this.

I find it curious how different online is from IRL for me. I find interacting online MUCH harder and more intimidating than IRL and the few times I have said hi to someone I'm friendly with online IRL, it has not gone well. And I've been a heavy online user since the late 90s.

I'd never thought about it, but I think you are correct. Our president, our dean, and our former dean are all medievalists.

Not long after Brexit, I was at a historic site (Bannf Castle) in Scotland that had reintroduced beavers and I couldn't help but chuckle at the fact that the beavers they imported were from Poland.

if you are out of state and you send Amy McGrath money you are obligated to send an equal amount to a regular Kentuckian as penance for making her a thing again. my Venmo is jdhowa2 ✌️

I live in a small college town in the Midwest. It's totally walkable but people are just not into it for some reason. "I saw you walking," they say to me.

The republicans seem to be taking aim at the SAT. The democrat position will likely be to defend it as status quo, as usually happens.

Just depressing to see the bad party actually trying to do things to enact a doom vision of America and then look over at the "good" party to see them promising to make no improvements whatsoever.

He was a proud partisan and a political fighter. I was in my late teens reading him and I think he (and you) have maybe most made me who I am politically. We could use many more pundits like him.

My close friend joined the marines in a kind of depressive funk, hoping he would be killed in Iraq. (His service did him a world of good, thankfully.)

It's a smart move, since the press will cover it neutrally and the Dem leadership won't really care about it either.

Students did not quite know what to make of my (true) claim that you can take *any* class "for fun." I took a calc-based statistics class "for fun." It was great! (IDK how much I learned, but I did enjoy it.)

I'm old enough to remember when the prevailing argument against affirmative action was that it failed to consider the "real" form of unfairness, which was income disparity
