A graphic entitled "so long, farewell". It reads: "Many of the 1608 respondents who answered the question below in a Nature survey said that the election of Donald Trump as president had affected their future plans." It then shows the question: "Are you a US researcher who is considering leaving the country following disruptions to science prompted by the Trump administration?" An orange bar shows 75.3% respondents said yes. A blue bar shows 24.7% respondents said no.

The mood was defiant at many of the rallies, where chants of โScientists will not be silencedโ, โFacts over fearโ and โWhat do we want? Peer review! When do we want it? Now!โ were heard.

This isnโt going to pass, as we keep hearing from science leaders. Itโs not something we just need to get to the other side of.
Itโs a fundamentally new politics for US science and we need to engage differently. The old playbook wonโt work. 2/
There is a lot going on right now! So much in fact that our news team at @science.org is now running a Trump tracker to keep track of it all. *sigh* ๐งช

As this "pause" hits you and your project, institution, workplace, etc:
TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT.
Contact your MoC, esp if they're a Dem. Contact a relevant advocacy group. Contact the press, local, regional, movement, trade - and not just for an LtE, for a story.
Tell real life stories of harm.
I am calling due to grave concerns with the freezing of communications at Federal agencies. Specifically, I am calling regarding HHS and the National Institutes of Health, including the indefinite suspension of council review meetings, review section, and travel. Currently, our state of [insert state here] benefits from over $654 million [WI data; insert data from your state here] in biomedical research funding from the NIH with a significant portion of that going to support jobs, innovation, and education, translating to $1.64 Billion in economic activity [WI data; insert data from your state here]. As a concerned local [citizen/resident/scientist/researcher/educator], I urge you to make sure that the money that has already been allocated for NIH extramural funding, including all training and workforce development grants remain committed. Having this funding removed would be disastrous for our local economy, important university biomedical research, and would lead to the loss of thousands of research training positions at the staff, postdoctoral, and graduate student level. NIH has always benefited from Congressional support across political ideologies, and continuing to commit to its funding and extramural projects ensures our country remains at the forefront of biomedical research efforts and innovations.
