Did this with my year 13s in #Alevelmaths as a gentle warm up.

Getting them to guess what f(x) and g(x) was and to find each area depending on their functions was less gentle! #Mathstoday

Thought it might be useful to have a post of which exam boards people use for Maths, to help find each other when we have queries etc about the specification or where to find resources. Add yourself in a comment below if you're happy for people to know what you do- no obligation to do anything else!

πŸ“‹ Assessment writing (across all key stages). Would love to see what is common practice out there. Do other maths departments rewrite their unit/end of year assessments every year? Do you ever reuse them? Please share as I’d love to hear back! #MathsToday @mathsjem.bsky.social

These look like a great resource for A level maths:
www.alphaworkbooks.co.uk
They are closing down, so his books are currently free to download from his website until the website closes. #Alevelmaths

I would start now - but you may find that you still want to review the upcoming lessons the week before you teach them so you feel confident with explanations! I found @bicenmaths.bsky.social videos super useful - you get to see how he teachers a particular concept

Exam marking consistency: Ofqual must publish the data - SecEd There were 75,000 grade changes to GCSE, A level and AS level exam results following appeals in 2024

Of 330,000 or so #GCSE, AS & #Alevel grade appeals in 2024, around 220,000 marking errors were found resulting in almost 75,000 grade changes. Dennis Sherwood calls on #exams watchdog Ofqual to begin routinely publishing marking consistency metrics buff.ly/3CV1qZk #edusky

Books That Are About Maths, But Not About Teaching It A list of books about mathematics (but not teaching). This list was compiled from suggestions made by maths fans in responses to a social media post.

I crowd-sourced a list of maths-themed books recently. Not so well-curated as yours, but if anybody gets the bug and wants more, they can find the list and some background info here: tommaths.blogspot.com/2024/09/book...

In #MathsToday, I created this resource to help my Year 11s with their approach to the last question of a Higher paper. Idea is from goalfreeproblems.blogspot.com, worked answers and videos from mathsgenie.co.uk/papers.php. Made each question a goal free problem: www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/73vd8...

6 questions of the form:

On a copy of this diagram, mark the cointerior/corresponding/alternate angle.

The solutions have been drawn on, with the transversals highlighted in yellow.

6 diagrams with some angles given, including ones not needed to answer the question, and one missing that has to be found. They have been answered with the transversals highlighted in yellow.

I used to encourage students to highlight F or Z shapes for parallel lines questions, but today I just told Y9 to highlight the transversal. It’s an easier first step, and they were almost always then able to immediately see what to do next.

Also, I love these MathsPad questions!

In #MathsToday I’m looking for ideas/research links for what effective feedback looks like in maths. This could be for an end of term/end of unit assessment or any type of formative / summative test.
