A large bird sits on top of a leafy tree. It is brown streaked with white, has a crested “crown” of slightly longer feathers on the top of its head, and has a short hooked beak. Its eye is clear and sharp, giving it a noble look. The whole thing is set off by a background of clear blue sky.

An eye-catching gray bird with a bright orange belly is sitting on a branch with blue sky in the background. This is an American Robin. Here in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, we seldom see these handsome birds during the cold winter months, so for us a robin sighting is a reassuring sign that spring is coming. Spring actually doesn’t arrive here until April.
