I don't get the premise. Everybody who's pissed about this vote already thinks the republicans are unhinged authoritarians who're trying to end american democracy. Who's out there pissed at these reactionary "centrist" democrats, but mild about the republicans?

I can't imagine what this would entail that isn't profoundly anti-democratic

There aren't any promising atmospheric carbon capture technologies. It's pure wishcasting, and if we consider the absurd scope of the problem, I'd say it's highly improbable. Put more bluntly, it's a form of soft-denialism.

I question the technocratic assumption that polarization is merely an issue of misinfo, as if we'd all agree if presented with info deemed "true." Also these technical solutions assume that the ownership of the apps are neutral and have no conflicting interests. Foucault would like a word.

Fwiw, while this guy is obviously motivated, Mamdani has one hell of an uphill battle, as most traditional power structures have a material interest in opposing him.

When someone is facing significant blood loss and might not make it, you don't throw up your hands, say "they're screwed," and walk away. You do what you can to minimize the bleeding. As long as there is life on this rock, there will always be a reason to keep fighting.

Also I love the minimum wage and labor law reform part of the platform.

It's certainly better than what we have now. If it's the only option to provide that guaranteed social provision I'd support it, but I'd certainly prefer a more democratic solution.

Sure, but that's a bit of a false dichotomy. I'm all for incremental approaches, but we ought to be careful which approaches we choose and how they'll shape the power dynamics at play.

UBI reinforces that same system of corporate control. It's a pathway to an ostensible, guaranteed social provision that doesn't challenge the corporate owner's ability to control and profit from access to the means of life. The control is still fully intact as long as they're holding all the cards.

There's a pervasive american belief that the law and its "justice" are an indelible cosmic force that reaches into the realm of humanity to impose its will. An almost religious approach to a nominally secular jurisprudence.

An autocracy does not need to be stable to be earth-shattering. The Nazi system was incredibly politically unstable, and its economy was built on an unsustainable, obfuscated credit spending scheme. It never was going to last, but tens of millions lie dead in their wake regardless.

Things that are unacceptably extreme:

Not forcing people to shell out a few dollars when they get on the bus. Being uncritically cool with trans people. Not giving bombs to the group committing a genocide.

Things that are obviously normal and not worth discussing:

Large nazi chest tattoo

Even for the people who could fairly accurately be called "fascist," I notice a lot of people miss out that even strictly in an American context, it's a coalition of somewhat distinct ideological groups, with different goals, and with some notable fracture points.

I only hear people speaking of "the left" on social media or the MSM. The spectrum metaphor allows people to boil politics down to two univocal groups, the radical speaking with the same voice as the moderate but at a hysterical pitch, while positioning "the center" as neutral and therefore natural.

The climate movement’s biggest weakness What the climate movement is getting dead wrong.

Meat is a blind spot for people who care about climate. When I used to have dinner with my colleague Wally Broecker, the climate scientist who coined the term β€œglobal warming”, he would always order a steak.

I think the reasoning is more cynical. I doubt they care what the local folk think. I've heard they're struggling to procure the absurd compute claims they've inflated their stock with. They might just not want business intelligence firms to tie it back to them and catch them with their pants down.
