What is the public consultation about? On 16th April, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the terms “sex”, “man” and “woman” in the Equality Act refer to “biological sex” only, and do not extend to trans people with Gender Recognition Certificates (GRCs). The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) are now updating the sections of the statutory Code of Practice for Services, Public Functions and Associations affected by the ruling. As part of this process, they are seeking public feedback on the changes they have made.

Do I need to take part in the consultation? Ideally, we want plenty of people and organisations to respond to the consultation, to clearly and powerfully raise our concerns about how this will impact the trans and non-binary, LGBTQ+, disabled, cisgender and other communities. However, working through the public consultation will take time and mental/emotional energy, and some people may prefer to focus their energies elsewhere. To help with this, we’ve advised on how you can respond if you have only 10 minutes; if you have 15 minutes; or if you have 30 minutes or more.
