Its weird that mail carriers are never the center of anybody’s conspiracy theory.

Officers of a government agency who visit your house SIX DAYS A WEEK seems like conspiracy heaven, but I guess everyone likes them too much.

We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."
Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history - which is no doubt true - but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a wartime economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.
That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

From Hunter S. Thompson’s ESPN page 2 column one week after 9/11.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

- Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

Why do I have to pretend that I'm going to print something in order to save it as a PDF. Why do I have to engage in a little ruse.

Evidently he told his biographer the night after the first episode of Conan’s first late night show and didn’t like it! Richard Nixon watched Conan Oβ€˜brian!

I think the Simpsons did an episode that featured this same steel mill.

Agree with the exception of DS9 goofy episodes (tiny shuttle! Baseball with vulcans!) which are so endearing, but they are played as if they don’t know it’s goofy. So your rule still holds.

The trick with Star Trek is that it is wonderful when it’s inadvertently goofy and ridiculous and the absolute worst thing you’ve ever seen when it’s attempting to be goofy and ridiculous

Last night Kristen Spours, Team GB's sole entry in the women's figure skating, skated a beautiful routine despite not having full use of her left leg due to spinal surgery last summer.

Sometimes I don't go to the gym because my trainers are upstairs and I'm downstairs.

the idea that making art is embarrassing if you don't do it well enough to make a career out of it is an objectively harmful and toxic brainworm.

Be be fair, a huge amount of those houses are victorians which look like ornate wedding cakes, there are so few no normal-ass houses in SF. A sprinkling of normal houses in the outer sunset. I get why nobody wants to tare anything down to build more units. And yet.

one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things

Stern could have easily been part of this world, he had the money and fame, and some would assume the same viciousness as those in deep. I think what separates someone like Stern from the rest of these monsters is enough internal self hatred that he could translate into some sort of moral code.

i had never thought about that. I think you’re probably right. I bet there is also something about being a professional question asker that makes you forced into empathetic thinking, even if you are an asshole by nature. Joe Rogan was also not on perv island, but probably could have been.
