Crisis between the Ordinary and Eventful: Housing, Material Conditions, and Everyday Urbanism
In many cities, crisis isn’t rupture—it’s everyday life.
Evictions, debt, precarity, housing struggles.
But also repair, care, solidarity.

Capping off 4 years of work in 2 hours is always a challenge, but I thoroughly enjoyed discussing my thesis with Paola Jirón and @natemillington.bsky.social today.
Many thanks to all those who made this research project possible - supervisors, interlocutors, and interviewees!

@wardykg.bsky.social & I thank examiners Paola Jirón, @natemillington.bsky.social & chair @jamiedoucette.bsky.social His thesis is a comparison of cycling policy across 3 cities, highlighting the politics and policy mobiliy of cycling policies, mobility justice & infrastructural reconfigurations

Proud supervisor alert! Congratulations Dr. @tvlaake.bsky.social who defended his thesis: Between processes and instances: comparing the intra-urban differentiation of cycling policy & infrastructure provision in Greater Manchester, Mexico City, and Toronto.

The news out of Manchester today fills me with profound sadness. I have no doubt that the city will pull together, it always does. Thinking of those senselessly murdered and their loved ones.

Labour’s plan to revitalise high streets is good - now it has to make sure people hear about it | Morgan Jones
There have been hyped policies before about local funding, but unlike ‘levelling up’ this project could lead to actual change, says Morgan Jones
‘The theory of change here is based on ideas about political trust, understanding Reform as a manifestation of anti-politics.’ Still lots of questions on how to protect community assets once local authorities buy them & msy need to sell on due to wider debt. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Agree the plan is good, but council ownership is not going to work where most councils have serious financial challenges.
Here in Birmingham, the council is selling off most of it's property portfolio.

Yes, was discussing this over the past few days, as it's the same issues across municipal services in Athens, Santiago and Manchester. Global problem, simple solution...

There has been a lot of chat at #OASPA2025 about how, if we were starting the scholarly publishing system from scratch, we would build it differently. And that we have to work with the system as is, with all its flaws (my gloss). I agree to some extent - but I'm not sure this framing is helpful

Great piece on the politics of moving counter-hegemonic ideas into mainstream policy and practice. As this paper shows, there's not a huge amount of work bridging policy mobilities and the geographies of social movements, but really productive space for that work to be done.

Ministers could give mayors control of schools and hospitals in devolution shake-up
Exclusive: Steve Reed, backed by Labour Together, wants to devolve control over more local services
Devolution without a a set formula for mayoral funding risks replicating or even deepening regional inequalities. It also perpetuates lack of transparency and risks breaking trust in democratic processes www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Next time an undergraduate wants to do their dissertation on Manchester’s music scene, I’m going to show them this picture and advise they make a dissertation out of this.
