The antiwar movement needed to be bigger and more militant between Vietnam and 9/11 for us not to be in the hole that allowed the Patriot Act, DHS, Blackwater, JSOC & ICE to make our work infinitely harder and put us in the even deeper hole we're in now.

When I was a wide-eyed 23-yo at my first protest, immediately after 9/11, it felt really unfair that the elder speakers were so frustrated, saying "where have you been?" I was brand new. But now I get it. They weren't talking to me, specifically. The antiwar movement NEEDED to be bigger, sooner.

yes, yes yes. when I hit the streets for the first time in response to Desert Shield, it was the same vibe for the same reason--the antiwar movement needed to be bigger to combat all that was coming, and all those older activists could see it coming, too.

Love this thing pundits do where they pretend not to understand why students might protest Israel (a country that their school may actively be funding and therefore the protests are about trying to get their school to take action) and not Iran (a country that their school has nothing to do with).

The people of Iran are not an existential threat. This is a ham-handed attempt to manufacture consent by othering an entire country full of people who have a lot more in common with you and me, than we have with the folks advocating for violence against them.

The act of dehumanization impacts not just the person on the other end but also the person who is practicing dehumanization

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.

I do actually think there is a serious imbalance on this app. A lot of politics and not enough culture. Some of that has to do with the fact that Black Twitter mostly went to Threads.

oof I think a lot about this. my entire area of interest, passion, work, study is the intersection of arts, culture, and spirituality. I talk all the time about how art/culture are woven into the issues of our time and what we're fighting for, but I get on here and don't know how to talk about it.
