I think this could be the larval spinning of Teleiodes wagae (Hazel Groundling), found on hazel (Corylus) in the garden yesterday evening. Sadly the tenant had long gone, but not surprising as the moths were on the wing from May-June, when it was the most common Gelechiid sp. here. #teammoth

Thanks Dave. Yes, and once you get your eye in on the differences with similar species it's not that difficult to identify without gen det (although it's still grade 4 of course).

Thanks Steve. Always suspected it was wagae but nice of Chris to confirm it for me.

Thanks Clive. Well it was Chris that did all the hard work!

It is Steve. Mostly a northern and western species. Scarce or absent further east.

It's the most common Eupithecia here Steve (well along with Common and Double-striped). I can get up to 20 per night in August.

No's have dropped here recently, just 1-2's mostly, other than masses of mercurella. Signs of Common Wainscot and Set. Hebrew Character numbers building last night, plus common migrants (likely locally bred), so numbers should start rising over the next week or two. August can be dull or brilliant!

I've been seeing a few like these Tim. Will be interesting to see if yours are Saltern Ear (I didn't retain mine).

Would be good to organise something, although I'm without a generator at the moment so reliant on others.

Hopefully not Dave. Look forward to seeing the photo/s later.

True.
Yes, I'd love to try Penlee Point at some stage, although anywhere along that stretch should be productive.

Twas up on Kit Hill yesterday & you could see more clearly how the moths may disperse northwards from the coast to my garden. I'd say most arrive over the Rame Peninsula (Portwrinkle area) whereas you may be seeing moths navigating up the Tamar from Plymouth Sound. Yes, fingers crossed for next time

Makes you wonder if the likes of Vestal, Small Mottled Willow and perhaps even Ni Moth bred locally (even in the garden!), as it's a month or two since the first influx of these species.

I think you're right Martin. Perhaps a little too early for the likes of these and especially ramburialis to get a generation in over here so they might be hoping over the Channel from France. When the locally bred ones start to emerge they could be very numerous!

I can't buy an exigua at the moment, despite recording over 400 in June. Last one here was 12/7!

Not to mention the double line (headband!) across the base of the thorax, which you can just make out on your moth.
