part of the fauna is probably in the sharks and rays. Keen eyes will notice that some prominent taxa are missing here. This is mostly due to the stratigraphy of the Wadi being an absolute nightmare. While single members are relatively well defined, how they relate to each other...

The "valley of the whales" as it is better known is a classic locality from the late Eocene of Egypt. Most famously it is place filled with the remains of early whales, Archaeoceti, but it's less straight forward as a piece than one...

A black-and-white pencil sketch of a shark, Physogaleus, nibbling on the tattered edge of a severed head of the whale Basilosaurus. The large head is lying on its side on the seafloor with mouth wide open, while the shark’s body is very curvy as it attempts to slice off a bite. Near the head on the seafloor is a much smaller crab.

Late Glacial to Early Holocene Vegetation Reconstruction from the Wenas Creek Mammoth Site in Washington State The Wenas Creek Mammoth site pollen record, which extends from ∼20,000–10,000 cal yr BP, is significant given that few eastern Cascade paleoecological records span the Late Glacial to Early Holocen...

Happy #FossilFriday here is a wee climate paper that I coauthored. We found that 20kya eastern Washington was drying and warming up and chasing away all the pesky pine trees (ew, trees).

As usual with pleistocene stuff, my job was figuring out how old all the dirt was (age-depth modelling)

The pride and power of Iowa State basketball's Audi Crooks Audi Crooks hears the haters. But Iowa State's star inherited resilience from her mom and joy from her dad. Her high-scoring game is the ultimate counterpoint.

Spent some time in Iowa and went long on Iowa State’s Audi Crooks. Despite her dominance, she deals with a lot of negativity, especially about her body. But no matter what is said about her, Audi Crooks wears a smile. www.espn.com/womens-colle...

On this International Women’s Day, I cannot stop thinking about all the girls in Iran, in Sudan, in Gaza, and so may places β€” girls whose lives were snuffed out in conflicts they played no part in, before they could ever become women.

And I am thinking about their mothers.

These cancellations were so much more horrible for other people than for me personally, as my fellowship was coming to an end. Huge losses to hundreds of people and dozens of long term projects and ongoing relationships. The loss to humanities has been incalculable

Dear NEH Grantee,
This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. FEL29509824) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement.
Your grant no longer effectuates the agency's needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant
Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFR§200.340.
For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President's agenda. The President's February 19, 2025 executive order mandates that the NEH eliminate all non-statutorily required activities and functions. See Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, E.O. 14217 (Feb. 19, 2025). Your grant's immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government, including its fiscal priorities. Any objections or appeals to this termination will be managed in strict accordance with the President's Executive Orders,
