Result from the Wadi al Hitan #paleostream!
The "valley of the whales" as it is better known is a classic locality from the late Eocene of Egypt. Most famously it is place filled with the remains of early whales, Archaeoceti, but it's less straight forward as a piece than one...
A black-and-white pencil sketch of a shark, Physogaleus, nibbling on the tattered edge of a severed head of the whale Basilosaurus. The large head is lying on its side on the seafloor with mouth wide open, while the sharkβs body is very curvy as it attempts to slice off a bite. Near the head on the seafloor is a much smaller crab.
Quick sketch of the tiger-shark-cousin Physogaleus nibbling on the severed head of what would normally be its predator, Basilosaurus. A scene in the shallow waters of late Eocene Egypt, sketched during the Wadi-El-Hitan formation #Paleostream. #paleoart #sciart #shark #whale

Happy #FossilFriday here is a wee climate paper that I coauthored. We found that 20kya eastern Washington was drying and warming up and chasing away all the pesky pine trees (ew, trees).
As usual with pleistocene stuff, my job was figuring out how old all the dirt was (age-depth modelling)
How I always imagined it happened. Dangerous large mammals.

On this International Womenβs Day, I cannot stop thinking about all the girls in Iran, in Sudan, in Gaza, and so may places β girls whose lives were snuffed out in conflicts they played no part in, before they could ever become women.
And I am thinking about their mothers.
Ah. This is 'that' skull. One of two records of the southern mammoth in North America....or not? (depends on who you ask).

Screenshot of my DOGE letter βDr. Joseph Rezek Dear NEH Grantee, This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. FEL29509824) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement. Your grant no longer effectuates the agency's needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFRΒ§200.340. For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President's agenda. The President's February 19, 2025 executive order mandates that the NEH eliminate all non-statutorily required activities and functions. See Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, E.O. 14217 (Feb. 19, 2025). Your grant's immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government, including its fiscal priorities. Any objections or appeals to this termination will be managed in strict accordance with the President's Executive Orders,
Last year, this guy (left) from DOGE used ChatGPT to find NEH grants that were too βDEIβ for Trump, and canceled them, including mine, as shown by the letter I received last April (right). Huge new NYT article on the back story link below

But, on positive personal note, I've started talks with both Polish Consulate in Hong Kong and Beijing Women's Federation, to start series of activities related to promoting historical women in geosciences and palaeontology across China.

NATIONAL DAY of ACTION VIRTUAL ONLINE SATURDAY, MARCH 7TH, 12:00PM - 3:00PM
We're hosting a virtual rally for those who are not able to attend a March 7th National Day of Action event in person. We don't think structural barriers should prevent anyone from being able to participate in a movement that directly impacts their lives.
