Dublin is plagued by derelict and vacant sites; here are some examples in and around Phibsborough, Dublin 7, as shown in my graphic.

Another record 16,353 people, including more than 5,100 children, are now accessing emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland.

Key boxes have become modern-day parasites. Planning compliance rates in Ireland are abysmally low, and regulations are not consistently enforced. No wonder we have record homeless figures every time they're published.

The new record of 5,014 homeless children living in State-provided accommodation is a national disgrace. Ireland's housing system has deteriorated primarily because of ineffective government policies.

Allowing properties to remain derelict for decades should be considered a crime against the state. Ireland's housing system is in a state of disrepair, primarily due to ineffective Government policies.

It's worth mentioning that by the end of June 2025, another monthly record of 15,915 peopleโ€”including 4,958 childrenโ€”were accessing emergency homeless accommodation.

OLD RECORD SHOP Many middle aged Dubliners will remember this shop and may have even bought there but I have a feeling that their business was failing well before they closed their doors for the last time in 2003.

My coloured Robert French c.1900 photo shows tram number 119 travelling along Irishtown Road in the inner suburb of Dublin City. Irishtown (An Baile Gaelach) originated as a settlement in the 1400s when the English expelled the Irish from within the city walls of Dublin.

We should be making livable homes, not 32-square-meter units.
To put this in perspective: a standard tennis court for doubles play is 260 square meters, meaning eight of these minimum-sized studio apartments could fit into a single court.

College Green could have avoided much of its ugly street clutter by using the "third rail" technology, similar to what is used in Bordeaux in France. This technology eliminates the need for poles and power lines. Unfortunately, it wasn't implemented mainly because of cost concerns.

The transformation of Malahide (Mullach รde) in Fingal, County Dublin, since 1953 has been remarkable. This growth can largely be attributed to developers who recognised the area's potential in the 1960s, leading to the construction of numerous housing estates.
