In Brussels, EUVIP Head Alfred Gerstl and member David Broul held a high-level meeting at the European External Action Service to discuss #EU relations with Indo-Pacific partners, notably Southeast Asia and India, & the Global Gateway Initiative. We also shared with them our policy recommendations 🌏

Monique Taylor, in her speech, focused on AUKUS turbulence: US political uncertainty & resource debates.

She highlighted how quickly commitments shift, showing the EU the risks of relying on the US and the need for stronger European security partnerships.

Paul O’Shea delivered insights on Japan’s shifting politics & waning pacifism, highlighting generational change, fears of US abandonment, and the erosion of the rules-based order shared by both Japan & the EU.

Theresa Fallon discussed power hedging & balancing, Russia & China’s growing influence, and the critical role of undersea cables, highlighting how global dynamics shift as two major powers challenge US unipolarity.

The EUVIP dissemination workshop with ICDS kicked off in Tallinn, Estonia.

In the Indo-Pacific, the EU faces increasing pressure. @euvip.bsky.social head Alfred highlighted the need for more military commitment, listening to the region & deeper ties with like-minded partners.

In her speech, Julie Yu-Wen Chen, an @euvip.bsky.social member, mentions how Taiwan, often sidelined in international discussions, needs visibility without distraction.

Nordic & Baltic democracies offer a model in defending shared values & countering challenges from China/Russia in grey-zone areas

The 3rd speech, by Paul O’Shea, warned that the US–Japan alliance is being eroded under Trump’s 2nd term.

He highlighted the rise of Sanseito, echoing Trump with “Japan First,” nuclear ambitions & foreign policy independence, as a challenge too important to ignore.

In her speech, Theresa Fallon examined the EU’s role in the Indo-Pacific, calling for greater engagement to counter #China and noting India’s rising importance.
