Absolutely tiny Yellow-throated Warbler (Setophaga dominica), a mostly gray and white bird with fun facial patterning and a yellow throat, sitting on a pine tree next to a pinecone. The photo deceives you by making you think this bird is capable of sitting still.

Sometimes it is the not noticing of the menus that mean its well-crafted (but I am sure all of the work will be noticed nonetheless). Unless you mean like emily specifically in which case ill whisper subliminal messaging in her ear to clue her in πŸ€”

They always look a little upset in photos that someone managed to catch them haha, so cute though

A Clapper Rail caught in the open, unusual for the species. Almost looking a small chicken with a long thin bill. It is mostly pale gray save for orange-red on the bill. Its flanks are vertically streaked with white.

Just got lucky looks at one of these this week in Mass! Was shocked to see one this late in the year (cryptid photo my friend took)

When i first saw this post i had wondered where you might be where these would both be vagrants, because Swainson’s has a wide distribution. But ireland! Wow! Congrats on the rarity :0

Body still seems too gray/light for eclipse male pintail imo. Id second eclipse redhead even if it still looks a little wonky?

Yeah those are both good notes and youre probably right then? Plumage doesnt seem especially helpful here so those might be the best markers. It does sort of seem like the bill could have that dark tip but that might be me hallucinating between the pixels

The neck seems so light but could it be canvasback? The bill would probably be more useful for that and im not great at ID’ing either of them

I think of hummingbirds as tropical, or at least warmer weather birds...so this Rufous hummer at the top of Steens Mountain.9500 feet above sea level and next to a snowbank was a bit jarring. #birding

With iNaturalist, GBIF, and an increasing amount of scientific literature online, it is now possible to identify many bugs from all over the world without having to get physical specimens in front of an expert. Last 5 years especially.
