Now it's March I can say "applications close next month!"

Still lots of time to finesse your idea for a cool linguistics communication project!

So cool how my university isn't hiring new faculty but they HAVE recently announced they'll be "deploying Google’s generative AI solution, Gemini, to students, faculty and staff in the coming weeks"

Operation Epic Fury

Every time this administration names an action, they choose something a 14-year old boy would call a video game. Cutesy names don’t cover up warmongering and terrorism, they just reveal a profound disrespect for human life.

β€œI care about this and want to know more about it” is a great reason to study something in college. So is β€œHuh, that sounds interesting.”

Like I said, it’s not everybody’s thing, but being able to pursue your curiosity without a tangible other goal in mind is a good thing, I think.

In a statement to The Crimson, Summers wrote that the decision to leave was β€œdifficult” and that he remained β€œgrateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have been privileged to teach and work with since coming to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago.”

β€œFree of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” he added.

When academia's stars mistreat people, they're "punished" with relief from teaching, mentoring, and service responsibilities. This frees them to spend more time on the more valued work of research. And dumps less valued responsibilities onto colleagues, making it harder for them to become stars.

Is the president mocking the U.S. women’s hockey team on a celebratory call with the men’s team going to attract even an iota of the sustained handwringing that the idea of trans athletes disadvantaging women’s sports has gotten

maybe this is because i'm the kind of goody-goody who gets a PhD but I find it shocking that they don't even try to lie that there's some justifiable use case for this. it's just a tacit "we all know you don't want to learn anything, and now you don't need to"

i know i'm preaching to the choir here but
what the fuck is the point of undertaking education if you don't want to *learn* it
is the end result just getting a paper saying you're One Smart Cookie? validation? for growth you didn't undertake?
i know this is self-evident but it's still crazy to me!

As we drown in edtech surveillance and AI slop it's easy to forget that we already discovered the best methods of human learning a long time ago: focused listening, reading, talking, and writing. Any tech innovation designed to shortcut any of those things actually hurts the learning process.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Alberto CastaΓ±eda MondragΓ³n says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.

He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.

He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man β€œpurposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

I just got done watching a truly horrible movie at Sundance ("The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist"). It was introduced by the Sundance programming rep as having "a strong sense of informational integrity", but it's hard to imagine a characterization more off the mark.

Glad to see the parents highlight something I felt was overlooked: Alex Pretti’s β€œinterference” with border patrol agents was standing in the way while they were roughing up a woman.

Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti
Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti

β€œWe are heartbroken but also very angry.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.

I do not throw around the β€˜hero’ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed.

Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

The newest video shows very clearly that they attacked him for coming to an aid of a woman that the agents pushed, and then executed him while he was immobilized. Everything the government has said, like with Good, has been a complete lie.
