Driving by the Wesley Ridge wildfire on Vancouver Island yesterday afternoon, with a helicopter seen dropping water from Cameron Lake.

Canada's 2025 wildfire season is now its second worst on record. Climate change is making wildfires larger, more frequent and more severe.

Expanded high-speed rail network part of vision for Europe, says EU’s transport chief The bloc – which will present plan this autumn – wants train travel to compete with planes on connectivity and cost

@mark-carney.bsky.social This should be part of our Β«national projectΒ» instead of pipelines. Thankyou for your attention to this matter. Europe had the experience to contribute.

GOP's Texas map has Austin residents sharing district with rural Texans 300 miles away It would "suppress the votes of Black and brown Austinites," one Democrat said.

This was Trump’s latest idea to steal next year’s election. The GOP knows it cannot win without cheating. We may just be in the final full year of Democracy, but few people are taking this seriously.

U.S. Ambassador on why Mexico got a tariff extension but Canada did not: β€œWell, I think it's because of the feeling in the room or the energy in the room when the negotiators are talking to each other."

So now the USA makes decisions based on vibes not facts, not economics. Makes perfect sense πŸ€―πŸ–•πŸΌπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Except wetland mosses take thousands of years to accumulate to significant depths, so in this case, one cannot say rapid mitigation. Depth of mosses (and carbon stored) increases very slowly. But does increase.

Boldest move will be for Los Angeles to cancel the Olympics rather than submit to this 1936 horseshit. Yank the entire event as a stark and historic emergency flare shot up into the sky.

Everyone should be reading this book to understand the new age we have embarked upon. It's like nothing we know from the recent past. And it's only going to accelerate (unless we decide to control emissions).

OK, y'all, as I mentioned, I went to see Paul Simon play last night. I found it unexpectedly moving, quite profound actually, and I want to do a short thread about it.

I'll start by saying that, for a whole bunch of reasons, aging & mortality have been much on my mind lately.

The same thing happened in Niagara. Stone fruit trees were removed to make the way for vineyards. Now it's much harder to find Ontario peaches, nectarines etc. And canned fruit is mainly from China (lost the canning industry as well).

Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World" by John Vaillant is a non-fiction book that explores the devastating 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire and its connection to climate change and the fossil fuel industry. The book details the fire's rapid spread, the evacuation of 88,000 people, and the destruction of much of the town. It also examines the history of fire, its relationship with humans, the science of fire behavior, and the environmental and social consequences of relying on fossil fuels.

To those who think burn bans amount to government overreach, consider reading this book. It'll disabuse you of the idea that today's environment is just like the good old days.

β€œIt’s not a coincidence that this resurgence of housewife iconography comes at the same time abortion rights have been stripped. What better way to quiet the next generation of girls, growing up without repro rights, than to tell them it’s actually progress? They’re making sexism aspirational.”

Canada’s the only country having over 60% with a tertiary education.

This isn’t a numbers competition: it explains Canada’s values, β€œEducation can promote gender equality, reduce child marriage, promote peace”

Education promotes decency.

5 Graphics Explain the Climate-Fire Feedback Loop Climate change is making forest fires worse, and vice-versa β€” creating a vicious "climate-fire feedback loop" that has helped fuel record burns in recent years.

Forest fires are releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than India does
