They are so proud of this creature. (As they should be) The gift store was legit 50% just salamander merch.

Kyoto Aquarium today. Never seen so many giant salamanders. (They had one Japanese on display and a small army of hybrids.)

The Calico Critter (Sylvanian Family) horses have fingers and toes, not hooves. So this can only mean theyโ€™re intended to be Eohippus. Thatโ€™s so niche of them. ๐ŸŽ

Nice! I saw it when it was in Niigata. For some sad reason the Rampardos skeletal wasnโ€™t on display. The merch store alone was amazing.

Maybe the ceratopsian is โ€œChipekweโ€? A horned dinosaur-like monster said to live in the Congo.

Yes itโ€™s a mosasaur. If itโ€™s indeed a cryptid theme my guess is itโ€™s supposed to be one of the many generic lake/sea monsters.

Found at a 7Eleven in Tokyo. Monster blind box. I think theyโ€™re supposed to be cryptids but unsure where the Centrosaurus fits in if thatโ€™s the case. I got Chupacabra. @tetzoo.bsky.social might appreciate.

Japan is crazy. Yes this is a gashspon of all griffins in the train station. Not different mythical creatures one of which is a griffin. ALL. GRIFFINS. I had exactly enough coins left and there was literally one capsule left. Got the green one, which is the one I wanted most. It was a good day.

Japanese dinosaur(animals in general) toys are on another level. These were in a bin at an indoor playground. They are so well researched! The theropods even pass the wrist test!

When she was just 26 Florence Merriam wrote the first guide to birding with binoculars in 1889. And she slipped in this incredible feminist gem:

To us initially yeah. But Iโ€™d argue bipedal hairless primates that can launch themselves into space are a LOT weirder an animal than a reptile with some feathery things growing out of its back.

I know this is gonna sound smug but as fun as it is, in light of the recent publication of Mirasaura, I donโ€™t like referring to Triassic animals as โ€œweirdโ€. They were around for millions of years and are way more standard compared to most vertebrates than humans.

Newest #watercolor of the recently described Triassic reptile, #Mirasaura. I did this on a โ€œscrapโ€ piece of paper leftover from trimming a bigger piece and realized after itโ€™s roughly life-sized to some of the specimens! #paleoart
