the problem with "things were always this bad" is that it is rhetoric that exists, specifically and exclusively, to deny the lived reality that Republicans Fucking Make Shit Worse, and it usually comes from a place of "both parties serve the same masters!!" performative, weaponised cynicism

It probably depends on implementation. At base I don’t think it matters if the tax rate is 50% and you give 60% of people half off or if the tax rate is 25% and you make 40% pay double.

Yeah that soundtrack is excellent. The movie well captured “adrift in your 20s” in a way I imagined I would be but never was, and if I had been I don’t think I’d want to see it reflected back at me at this age

I can’t think of a single circumstance in which it is or should be acceptable to describe your human opponents/enemies as non-human or subhuman.

Maybe one is psychologically better at incentivizing behavior even if there’s no accounting difference

Is there a substantive difference between tax subsidies for families with children and an additional tax for people without children?

I loved that movie when I was 16, but I am like 95% sure I would find it intolerable now

Weird how that didn’t make the cut.

I tend to agree, and that’s also why I think journalists should not ever say anything like “these people are not human” about their perceived enemies. It’s morally reprehensible.

I think there should be statutory damages for phishing and phone fraud attempts, and one-way attorneys fee shifting

really can’t say enough about how mike johnson is a sniveling little coward of a man. a bayou-bred pushover with a dignity deficit that would embarrass renfield

Public D demands being a single issue that resonates publicly that they’re already ahead on gives them more leverage on basically everything. In this specific moment, they are doing very well.

he was also accused of sexual assault of a married woman who went out drinking with him while her husband and children slept in the very same hotel.

he claims he merely had consensual sex with her while her husband and children slept elsewhere in the hotel.

It doesn’t seem like it’s landing. The same way Ds got caught completely flatfooted back in March, Rs seem to have been caught completely flatfooted on this fight and they are struggling to catch up on messaging.

Crucifixion of dogs?

Caesar’s Legion n the march again, I see. Storming the banks of the Colorado river.

That dynamic already happens a lot; from what I see, patents tend (sometimes successfully) to counterbalance it and give more bargaining power to an otherwise less-resourced party

08.10.2025 14:05 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

I have more thoughts about it I may write up later. The present system basically requires new ventures to treat patents as an ongoing cost to build a portfolio, and without them, in competitive relationships, the winner would tend to be the party that already has more resources

Patent monopolies for most things are already pretty weak

I’m a single-issue voter from now until the day I die: “hold the people who did this and all these other crimes responsible, no matter what it takes”

I’m gonna go to town halls and congressional field offices and bring it up ad infinitum

I don't think the CA (statewide) likes DSA candidates. I don't and wouldn't vote for one if I had any other reasonable D option.

her answer was roughly "in a general election against a republican, no"

the issue it's getting at is a fair one it's just a really dumb way to ask the question. Trump is not well liked in CA and "Trump voters" is a bad way to identify the more conservative elements of California you might need to appeal to.

08.10.2025 04:09 — 👍 4    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

it's a slightly less stupid question than it appears because the democratic coalition in California has plenty of conservative elements that just won't vote for the CA GOP because the CA GOP is crazy. but Rick Caruso (running as a D) did win 45% of the vote in Los Angeles.
