Obviously I want artists to reach people and make money doin' that... but the juice ain't always worth the squeeze. One of the reasons, rap started appealing more to the lowest common denominator and becoming more cookie-cutter was because that stuff is easier to sell to the masses.

Mass appeal is not always an indicator of whether or not art is good or not. Sure, there have been lots of great "popular" Hip Hop artists over the years but there have also been truly phenomenal acts that never garnered mainstream success. That kind of validation comes and goes.

Hip Hop has had it's ups and down on the Billboard charts. I think the genre will be fine. What does making the top 100 or top 40 mean anyway, that a lot of casual fans and people who really don't like the genre as a whole have effectively been sold on a project or song?
