The Long Game beyond tariffs
The global economy faces a roller-coaster ride every time Mr. Trump is in the White House. Last time, a focus on controlling Chinaโs growing economic power meant that the rest of the world narrowly es...
Looking beyond #tariffs in Trump's #trade deals in this @uktpo.org blog (from yours truly): www.uktpo.org/2025/08/01/t...
It is imperative that we assess the deals for both tariff and non-tariff elements, with the latter having the ability to create longer-term impacts. Happy to discuss.

If I had said this last year, that Trump would try and deport US citizens in his first year, all Republicans and a nontrivial number of liberals and centrists would have attacked me for behind hyperbolic, and fear-mongering, and of having Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Live updates: Israel strikes Iran, killing 3 commanders; Trump urges Tehran to โmake a dealโ
The attacks, which Israel said targeted Iranโs nuclear program and military targets, killed Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, head of Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
โUnprovoked military strikes against a sovereign U.N. member state, its citizens, sleeping peaceful cities, nuclear energy infrastructure facilities are categorically unacceptable. The international community cannot afford to be indifferent to such atrocities.โ
Russian hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Iโm struggling to understand how is this any different from existing social security agreements of UK with Japan, Canada, NZ, US or countless others? Plus itโs for temporary workers & benefits UK workers in India as well. This is a huge win for the UK in place of additional Mode 4 commitments.
07.05.2025 10:28 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
Combine that with what seems to be not significant commitments on Mode 4 from UK indicates that the UK has managed to have its cake and eat it too, to a large extent. But most importantly, without the final text and tariff schedules, all judgements are headline grabbing attempts by opportunists.

Over the fence analysis of the FTA based on tariff lines is also premature. I mean one is a mature market with limited growth potential and the other is a growing economy with over a billion people. Then, 85% of tariff lines seems like a lot more than 99%. #TradeMath #IndiaUKFTA
06.05.2025 15:08 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Crediting Trump for India-UK FTA is rank amateur, at best. A significant majority of the agreement was concluded a long time ago with only some key areas of priorities for both sides outstanding. Attributing the conclusion of those to timing is mistaking correlation and causation. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ #IndiaUKFTA

I hope the significance of two countries like India and the UK signing this agreement, stands as a beacon of light in this dark era of creating trade divisions.
