I spent the first few years of my life in this iconic, early social housing.

Does anyone have any insights on the symbolism of this badge from c. 1900? It belonged to one of the founder members of the Manchester Italian annual Whit Walk.

It was also 'normal' for contributions to events - including at church services - with names, alongside donations. Since the event organisers of the events were often employers there was an acceptance that it could be detrimental to your 'career' not to donate something.

A great example of the kind of plain silk gowns that abound in collections but aren't usually exhibited. While the popular idea is that extant clothing is the crème de la crème, these could easily have been the "best dress" of someone lower on the social scale. 🗃️🪡
