I’ll certainly miss the dark-eyed junco in the snow being the fluffiest possible bird but today brought a marigold-faced house finch and I heard a catbird. I’m so ready for all the songbirds to come back.

I also really appreciated the memorial for Sister Joann Persch who along with Sister Pat Murphy (the two nuns were known affectionately as Rabble and Rouser) served the immigrant communities of Chicagoland for decades. You should learn more about them:

They are still lying as they abduct our neighbors and violate our rights as the press conference held today of Sundi "Sunny" Naqvi's friends, family, and attorney detailed in the attached thread- it is up to us to show up still to fight this.

Only one of these people, Silverio Villegas GonzΓ‘lez, was killed by CBP/ ICE agents five months ago when I was last here in Broadview outside of the ICE processing center.

The dead have grown as has our need to continue fighting against their state terror. Abolishing DHS is the only way forward.

Lord knows I’m no expert in the conflicts across the Middle East - but you don’t have to be in order to stand in opposition to the cruelties of war being ravaged on innocent people across borders far from your reality. It’s actually a moral imperative to oppose this no matter the cause or place.

As more than 1,000 Iranian men, women and children lay dead after days of bombardment from U.S. and Israeli missiles, the official White House X account on Thursday evening posted a video of scenes from popular action movies spliced with actual strike footage from their war on Iran. The clip was captioned: "JUSTICE THE AMERICAN WAY."
A real war with real death and real suffering being treated like it's a video game - it's sickening. Hundreds of people are dead, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, including scores of children who made the fatal mistake of going to school that day. Six U.S. soldiers have been killed. They are also dishonored by that social media post.
Hundreds of thousands displaced, and many millions more are terrified across the Middle East.
This horrifying portrayal demonstrates that we now live in an era when the distance between the battlefield and the living room has been drastically reduced. The moral crisis we are facing is not just a matter of the war itself, but also how we, the observers, view violence, for war now has become a spectator sport or strategy game. Indeed, the prediction market Kalshi recently paid a $2.2 million settlement related to users who were unhappy with how the company paid out the $55 million wagered on Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's ouster after his was killed

Journalists now use the term "gamifying" the war to describe this dynamic. What a profound moral failure, for gamifying strips away the humanity of real people. Let's not forget, a "hit" isn't putting points on the board; it's a grieving family whose suffering we ignore when we prioritize entertainment, and profit, over empathy.
Our government is treating the suffering of the Iranian people as a backdrop for our own entertainment, as if it's just another piece of content to be swiped through while we're waiting in line at the grocery store. But, in the end, we lose our humanity when we are thrilled by the destructive power of our military. We become addicted to the
"spectacle" of explosions. And the price of this habit is almost unnoticeable, as we become desensitized to the true costs of war.
But the longer we remain blind to the terrible consequences of war, the more we are risking the most precious gift God gave us: our humanity.
I know that the American people are better than this. We have the good sense to know that what is happening is not entertainment but war, and that Iran is a nation of people, not a video game others play to entertain us.

Iran war: What is happening on day nine of US-Israel attacks? The US and Israel continue to strike Iran, hitting oil storage depots and refining facilities for the first time.

Double-tap bombing schools, bombing water treatment plants, bombing oil storage depots and refining plants to smother cities in hazardous materials: a constant craven violence that won’t just stay with the scorch marks but will echo out for years in the memories of those living through it.

The former diplomat Carne Ross observed in September 2015 in The New York Times:[181]

For a former diplomat like me, I found it confusing: I kept looking for a hierarchy, the singular leader, or signs of a government line, when, in fact, there was none; there were just groups. There was none of that stifling obedience to the party, or the obsequious deference to the "big man"β€”a form of government all too evident just across the borders, in Turkey to the north, and the Kurdish regional government of Iraq to the south. The confident assertiveness of young people was striking.

region's administration has also been accused by partisan and non-partisan sources of authoritarianism, media censorship, forced disappearances, support of the Ba'athist regime, Kurdification, and displacement.

At the same time, DAANES has also been described by partisan and non-partisan sources as the most democratic system in Syria, with direct open elections, social equality, respecting human rights within the region, as well as defense of minority and religious rights within Syria.

DAANES has widespread support for its universal democratic, sustainable, autonomous, pluralist, equal, and feminist policies in dialogues with other parties and organizations.

In March 2017 the "United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria" was unable to find evidence to substantiate claims about ethnic cleansing, stating:

Though allegations of "ethnic cleansing" continued to be received during the period under review, the Commission found no evidence to substantiate claims that YPG or SDF forces ever targeted Arab communities on the basis of ethnicity, nor that YPG cantonal authorities systematically sought to change the demographic composition of territories under their control through the commission of violations directed against any particular ethnic group

God its so funny how hard Turkey+the US tried to do a smear campaign accusing Rojava of authoritarianism and ethnic cleansing to justify attacking them

but then the UN/human rights orgs investigated and are like "...this is a bunch of anarchists who are almost neurotically obsessed with equality"
