If white progressives cannot consider Black and Brown Americans are often choosing between prison pipeline or service by design, that cheering for dead soldiers means you're cheering for the over 40% of recruits who are people of color to die because of ugly white men's wars, I give up.

I'm a survivor of the military industrial complex recruitment system, signed my life away at 18 and there isn't a day I don't regret it. It fucked me up for life

Military recruiters should be run out of every town, and schools should outright ban them

And they are making these kids take lives.

That's absolutely unforgivable. It's a tragedy the whole way round.

So these big posts talking about how these soldiers deserve whatever happens?

Were apparently totally informed, morally clear 18 year olds who were capable of standing up to taller adults telling them what to do.

Right?

Maybe it's the YA author in me,
who met so many 17 year old kids and knowing 18 is too close to say any of them deserve THIS.

But I know at 18 I was absolutely unmoored. A kid brought up in poverty wanting a way out. A kid pressured by a parent. A kid who's going to need years to deprogram MAGA cult rhetoric.

No. I do not wish for death for them.

I wish for a better system so they don't feel a need to do this.

The average recruit into the military is 18.

Before your frontal cortex forms.

And can't really grok scale of consequence.

America is an aggressor and an empire that needs to fall, but I save some empathy for the 18 year olds we're about to kill, too.

No one should be dying to war. No one.
