The surveillance appears to largely be an intimidation tactic, five students who have been followed, recorded or eavesdropped on said. The undercover investigators have cursed at students, threatened them and in one case drove a car at a student who had to jump out of the way, according to student accounts and video footage shared with the Guardian.
The University of Michigan is using private, undercover investigators to surveil anti-genocide protesters on and off campus.
This is absolutely unconscionable and a complete betrayal of students by the university, not to mention a violation of their fundamental rights to academic freedom.
$45 billion for adult and family detention. That would be enough to detain 100,000 people at a time, perhaps more. The New York Times reported in early April that ICE had already requested proposals from contractors who run detention facilities. Add another $3 billion for the Office of Refugee Resettlement to hold migrant children who arrive unaccompanied. How much is that combined $48 billion? Adjusted for inflation, it would be: Enough to cancel the debt of 1,240,814 student loan holders ( averaging $38,375 each). A generous estimate of what it would cost to end U.S. homelessness for 19 months ($30 billion per year). 1.6 times the global revenue of the entire music industry in 2024 ($29.6 billion in 2024 dollars). More than enough to build a new stadium for all 30 Major League Baseball teams (the Oakland Asβ new stadium in Las Vegas is expected to cost $1.5 billion). More than Netflixβs forecast worldwide revenue from its 300 million-plus subscribers in 2025 ($43.5 to $44.5 billion). ICEβs detention budget in 2024 totaled $3.43 billion to hold 41,500 people at a time. This bill would quadruple that capacity,
Second, the Bill sets the stage for massive privatized, for-profit concentration camps. It will quadruple the capacity of ICE to detain people--giving it capacity to detain, in for-profit arrangements where corporations make money per person per day, at least 100,000 more people.

The target wasnβt home, and an arrest wasnβt made. We are told he lives at home with his parents, and was previously arrested at UC Irvine during an on-campus Pro-Palestinian protest. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons was on scene for the operation, telling me he took it personally that someone would try to put a target on his agents in an effort to interfere with them and put them at risk. Says person responsible will be held accountable. We will not be identifying the target unless an arrest is made. PHOTOS: Underneath are four splashy media photos from the operation.

In a move that raises very serious First Amendment issues, ICE executed a major splashy operation in California aiming to arrest a guy for posting fliers with names, pictures, and apparent phone numbers for ICE HSI agents.
