Tom Chadwick's 'The Christ Child'. Chadwick was killed at El Alamein in 1942, 2 days after his brother Hector. He'd set out to find Hector's grave when his scout car was hit by shell fire. @CWGC inscription: 'In Their Death They Were Not Divided' Β© @ashmoleanmuseum.bsky.social
22.12.2025 21:36 β π 29 π 11 π¬ 1 π 0A beautiful piece of writing by @danigaravelli.bsky.social which reminds me that my original fascination with the Second World War began sitting at the feet of various great aunts & uncles visiting my nana's bungalow.
04.12.2025 12:48 β π 6 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0Many congrats to our wonderful PhD student, Dr Avril Newton, on her formal graduation yesterday. Her excellent thesis focuses on the banking/insurance sector in #FWW Britain.

12.09.2025 10:05 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Thank you Charlie! And hopefully it will introduce Urquhart's work to a wider audience.
01.09.2025 22:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Not for a while yet - I have another book to finish first!
01.09.2025 21:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Delighted to have signed a contract with @edinburghup.bsky.social to produce a scholarly edition of Fred Urquhartβs war-time letters. Urquhart, an accomplished writer, was a lover of men and admirer of flamboyant women. His letters offer a Rabelaisian account of the British #SWW home front.
01.09.2025 10:48 β π 23 π 4 π¬ 2 π 0Slightly belated, but I have a promotion code from @oxfordacademic.bsky.social for my book, Wales in England 1914-1945:

15.08.2025 11:23 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0On the recommendation of Richard Lloyd Parry, I have just read 'Summer Flowers' (1947) by Tamiki Hara, a starkly mesmerising survivor's account of Hiroshima, immediately after the atomic bombing:

Working in the UK, I tend to prefer life writing sources (which can encompass recorded oral testimonies, as well as memoirs, diaries, letters, etc.) or personal narratives.
