In the Basin & Range Province, GPS measurements reveal prolonged extension—from infinitesimal motion in eastern Utah to about 6.5 mm/year in western Nevada. The effects of this slow, steady stretching can be observed in the presence of nearly parallel mountain ranges and valleys in the landscape.

Graph showing the fit between the best model and the measured slip and slip-rate functions.
Graph showing the shear strength as a function of slip corresponding to the best model. It is decreasing almost linearly from 6MPa to 1MPa over 2.5m of slip.
We obtain a cohesive zone length of 70% of the slip-pulse length and a rupture velocity of 90% of the shear-wave speed. This correspond to an estimated energy release rate of 5.8MJ/m^2. This is the first time this key parameter of rupture dynamics is measured directly on fault.

This model allows to compute the particle velocity. So we inverted for the local rupture velocity and the size of the cohesion zone, by adjusting the computed slip-rate to the measured slip-rate.

Finally, we tested another widely used slip-pulse model. In this model, the shape of the stress profile within the slip-pulse portion of the fault is imposed: There is a cohesion zone in which the stress linearly decreases with the distance from the tip, followed by a constant stress area.

Graph of shear stress change (on fault) as a function of slip. The curve is mostly a decreasing function, decreasing from 3MPa to -2.5 MPa over the course of 2.9m. There are small changes of the slope. The area under the curve correspond to the breakdown work and is equal to 7.7MJ/m^2. We made the hypothesis of a steady-state rupture velocity equal to 90% the shear wave velocity.
Then we used the interpolated slip-rate function as an input for a steady-state propagating pulse elastodynamic model, which allowed to estimate the stress-slip history and the breakdown work.

A. Graph showing the slip as a function of time. The curve is a smooth ramp that grows from 0 to 3m in 1.4s
B. Graph showing the slip rate as a function of time. The curve grows from 0 to 3.5 m/s in approx 0.6s then decreases to 0 in approximately 1 s.
We have tracked the motion of some landmarks across the fault to measure the slip function and the slip rate function:

For each +1 in magnitude, the rupture duration is approximately multiplied by 3, so if a magnitude 6.8 last approx 15 s, a 8.8 is 9 times longer: ~135s more than 2 minutes. And then there are effects due to the wave propagation and how far you are from the epicenter.
