The worst thing about Bluesky is people obsessing about social media

Writer, editor and presenter. QTS via Roehampton PGCE (2022), but older trainee history teachers just aren't hot right now. Ask me to write about business, finance, MR, PM, AI, VC & PE, HR, IT... It's not the platform, it's us; RSS FTW! #1,569,801
The worst thing about Bluesky is people obsessing about social media
11.08.2025 15:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Man, it feels so unreal these days when you're posting here or sending messages to someone throughout the day, and it's like:
- cute cats
- journalists killed in Gaza
- interesting new developments in ATProto
- funny bird
- USA descending further into dictatorship
- drone attack in Kyiv
- frog meme
I will add that's only part of the problem. The other part is, the more you flood private markets with cash, the less need for corps to seek public financing. So you gut public markets as well.

09.08.2025 09:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0main GPT 5 takeaway is that OpenAI are not in fact wizards, and if they release a new frontier model about two months after their last frontier model, it's going to be about two months better

06.08.2025 12:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Lol, just checked and I have a family wedding for the Arsenal game anyway!

06.08.2025 09:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My membership rolled over again (I hadn't clocked it's auto-recurring, though I haven't been able to buy tickets since Bielsa...). What are the chances of getting a ticket this season with my recent purchase record? I'm betting... zero? (I feel like sending in all my Lge1 stubs as proof of loyalty!)
06.08.2025 08:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Dunno. I don't know much about it, but it sounds like a plan to me. You could easily carve out exceptions for news events (a bit like 'fair use' for existing copyright) and frankly street photography has always been a bit creepy. TV crews always need to get waivers, don't they? Or blur faces out?
05.08.2025 12:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Amazing. Just sorry the American friend I got into cricket a few weeks ago won't have been awake to watch! But the Indian-heavy club in Baltimore will, I'm sure, share the news with him...
Poor pricing by the bookies yesterday, lol.
What if β hear me out β some people just sincerely think digital ID would be a good idea for public policy and that the trade-off with civil liberties is worth taking, and a weird quasi-conspiracy isn't required?
03.08.2025 09:53 β π 190 π 33 π¬ 30 π 8I'll probably write something that no-one will read about what I learned doing it (boy, is power in European history heavily concentrated, genetically speaking; this might explain their falling birthrates...). But the main thing is the joy I feel when I discover yet another thread of intermarriage.
01.08.2025 14:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I mean it does go back to 1006 (actually, to Cerdic, so centuries before that, even), but I did mean 1066.
01.08.2025 14:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have just entered the thousandth person into my GEDCOM family tree of British and European royalty. It started as a way of looking at power networks in medieval England around 1006 (and to explore John of Gaunt), but snowballed horribly. Would anyone pay for such a thing? It's taken a looong time.
01.08.2025 14:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0n+1. People not getting mocked for trying to be positive. Martyn Lewis (the 80s newsreader, not the finance bloke) was roundly mocked for trying to promote "good news" in 1993. This excellent thread shows we're not afraid to mark progress, at least...

Traffik. It always has been.
(Oh, OK, something this century? Got to be Succession hasn't it?)
Even on Friday morning the talking point by proponents was βactually the main purpose is to stop accidental pr0n surfing.β Possibly the only people to believe the βI wasnβt looking for it, honey, I just clicked a link!β story and build a policy around it.

25.07.2025 14:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Why not just say "89% of economists"? Also: why the caps? Chill, guys. We can read without you shouting, and we know that 89 is nearly 90.

25.07.2025 14:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Gotta admire Corbyn's relentless ambition. It's not enough to have played his part in delivering Brexit and Boris Johnson, he wants the accomplishment of a Farage premiership before he's done.
24.07.2025 16:34 β π 504 π 108 π¬ 156 π 41More people are considering AI lovers and we shouldn't judge.
22.07.2025 10:52 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Although... YouTube being a network of sorts and then imposing its own sanctions (not least changes to revenue models for uploaders) then becomes a similar risk, I guess.
21.07.2025 00:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Totally this. YouTube is already a well-defined, personalised TV channel for me now and so many of the shows I watch are made by people (I refuse to call them "creators"...π¨βπ¦³) who are completely independent. Corollary: why the hell does the BBC make podcasts that aren't broadcast radio first?
