In the late 17th century, a political upheaval in England had unexpected consequences thousands of miles away on the West African coast.
π New research reveals that Englandβs political upheaval in 1688 which changed the monarchy and the role of parliament, also shifted the balance of power in the transatlantic slave trade thousands of miles away on the West African coast. #EconHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

Literary gender norms and household economics
Do the fields of economics and fiction overlap when analysing human behaviour? A new book demonstrates that the two areas have more in common than we might think.
π Fiction can reveal the emotional and social costs of gender inequality. Bishnupriya Gupta contributes to a new book which features insights from economists on the way literature can deepen our understanding of economic behaviour and societal change.

Graph of unconditional convergence rates in US manufacturing by decade.
Economic historians have long debated whether lagging regions can catch up in productivity with industrial leaders. This column shows that, under the right conditions, such catch-up can be remarkably rapid. Using newly digitised US Census of Manufactures data covering 48 states and over 120 industries from 1880 to 2007, it finds strong unconditional convergence in manufacturing productivity: poorer states grew faster, closing gaps at an average rate of 7.6% per year. This far exceeds the 'iron law' of 2% conditional convergence often found in GDP per capita studies, and it accelerated dramatically in the 1940s.
Data of 48 US states and over 120 industries from 1880 to 2007 show strong unconditional convergence in manufacturing productivity. Poorer states grew faster, closing gaps at an average rate of 7.6% per year.

Graph of the gender equality paradox in higher education.
The most economically prosperous and gender-equal societies often display stronger gender segregation in educational choices β a pattern known as the βgender equality paradoxβ. This column explores this paradox using data on half a million children in 37 Western countries and 10,000 British families over two decades. The findings suggest that gender segregation in education stems from gender segregation in childhood activities and friendships, which are shaped by family income and parenting styles. Policymakers may need to move beyond promoting formal equality and focus on family, community, and school interventions that encourage mixed-gender interactions.
Manuel Bagues & Natalia Zinovyeva find that #gender segregation in #education stems from gender segregation in childhood activities and friendships, which are shaped by family income and parenting styles.
