DRAB is a good mnemonic, it pinpoints negative actions which enable workplaces to maintain business as usual. Acts of denial, assumption and burial work especially well together, as managers try to focus on the positives, or what can be retrieved from the fallout, even with the best of intentions.

Thank you!
Yes, while I have heard some genuine horror stories, it’s also easy to see how some of these responses can emerge from good intentions. That’s why people need to understand burnout instead of simply hoping that generally well-intentioned people will do the right things.

When someone discloses feelings of burnout, a supportive response can facilitate trust, hope, and effective recovery. A poor response can do the opposite.
I hear many stories about poor responses to burnout disclosure. Here's what NOT to do.

The first signs of burnout are coming from the people who embrace AI the most | TechCrunch Because employees could do more, work began bleeding into lunch breaks and late evenings. The employees' to-do lists expanded to fill every hour that AI freed up, and then kept going.

This doesn’t surprise me. It’s partly that embracing AI to boost productivity leads to increased output expectations. It’s that AI fundamentally changes the nature of work to be less fulfilling.

I didn’t really try studying until the last year of high school. I didn’t buy textbooks for college, because they were expensive and I did fine by taking notes in lectures. Then I started a PhD and discovered I didn’t know how to structure my own learning.

Striking paper from researchers at Anthropic using a randomised control trial to look at the effects of AI use on skills acquisition.

TL:DR β€˜We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery.’

It’s fine if people decline a β€œdeep-thinking” badge. It’s less fine that people are comfortable with a tool built on theft that harms the environment, drives layoffs and reduces paid work for real artists, constantly misinforms, and facilitates child pornography.

"Criticisms of AI must include guidance for responsible engagement with it, not just exhortations to avoid it" good lord, I am so tired of these pieces that are the "sensible AI guy" stance that mostly comes down to "AI is here to stay and I am ready to lick the boot, begrudgingly"

Yes! People are encouraged to believe that the holidays will cure their burnout, which (a) is unrealistic and (b) lets employers off the hook for allowing workers to burn out in the first place.

Perry: The return of the r-word "These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

β€œIt turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
