Indeed. I'm a software developer, and in my experience, a "coder's block" works exactly the same, and the only cure is going to back to the drawing board. Different field, same principle.

That's what native English speakers need to remember: there's a vast number of EFL and ESL speakers, many of them writing in English in various ways, and that inevitably has an effect on English usage in general.

It doesn't even have to be French text. It can just be native French speakers -- or EFL speakers in general -- being influenced by their native language while writing in English. As illustrated by my dash usage here.

On the other hand, I read it yesterday and slept a full 8 hours afterwards for the first time in far too long. 😲

Also, it proves that you don't need unpredictable plot twists to keep up tension. It's easy to pick up on the clues before the characters do, and even when you don't, nothing that's revealed is surprising. It's all entirely predictable (complimentary), yet none of that lessens the tension one jot.

Slavefic might not be Hamilton's cup of tea, but a kneejerk "gross" isn't great and IMO just hurts her argument, because it makes it seem a bit too much like she's just disgusted by its existence rather than having a valid point to make. And I do think she does have that valid point there.

You're right that that's the argument Hamilton seems to be making, but it doesn't change the fact that her "that's gross" is definitely aimed at slavefic rather than the selection criteria for professional publication.

I'm a fan, and I agree with you about book 3. I remember someone making a solid argument that the series should have been 4 books long, and I think they were right. Use the 2nd half of book 3 to resolve the Akielon part of the plot, but have the Regent escape. And then book 4 for the Veretian part.
