(Though honestly I'm convinced I will die of a heart attack caused by the seismic alerts.) Still, on September 19, 2017, I learned I'm from the place where 'land gets pulled apart, yet people pull together.' Where everyone paused their lives to do right by the neighbors they didn't yet know.

The hardest week of my life was 8 years ago today, when Mexico City was torn by an earthquake. (I was in the US, diagnosed with cancer a month later, which oddly wasn't as devastating!)

By now, my displaced friends are back home. The vestiges of destruction are fewer, farther in between.

As is the case with every city hosting an international sporting event, Mexico City has now announced a shiny new mass surveillance project in time for next year's World Cup: "Ojos que te cuidan," "Eyes that care for you."

In the past 2 years a few parents I know dropped their kids off at college. It's really moving to hear their reflections on this very American AND beautiful milestone. One of them reminded me last year I only get 6-8 more summers with mine… so far a great incentive to go out and do fun stuff.
