Yes. The whole debate around getting people back to work seems to completely ignore the fact that we've been through a pandemic. Long Covid, and the effect on young people.

β€˜I never thought I'd be someone who'd need to claim benefits. I was a doctor, I was going to be working, and I can't and that's devastating’.

Long Covid. They’ve shut/are shutting all the treatment clinics. Given up?

The Right Word in February This month's reading, writing, editing & publishing (oh, and watching, too)

I thought the film captured the complexities of Heathcliff & Catherine's relationship perfectly: open.substack.com/pub/theright...

That too – a double whammy. It feels self-indulgent. But also: I want to skip to the point!

Ha, this is true of me, too. I never realised I read in a magpie-like fashion until I tried and failed to enjoy audiobooks. Podcasts with slow intros drive me nuts!

So true. Shamelessness is now acceptable. Unless it's too shameless. It's complicated.

"Keep your side of the road clean." In a world of dolourous news, all you can do is find one small thing - then try to fix it. And so me and the British Society of Magazine Editors are launching this - to find the next generation of writers AND PAY THEM. Screw you, AI. We still believe in writing.

Great question! Everyone is different - I think that’s what’s good, that students find out how interested they themselves are in editing, it’s not generic. I like the idea that a one-day course can save you months of hunting for the wrong job or spending money on a Masters for no reason.

I really enjoy teaching this one-day online course because it's very interactive and we actually DO some copy-editing & proofreading. Reading up on careers is all very well, but there's nothing like having a go to see if you have a flair for something. getintobookpublishing.co.uk/courses/an-i...

Read the small print before entering. But also: big publishing companies, pass down some of the huge profits to the writers and editors so that they don't have to scrabble around for other ways to make a living...

One thing I'd forgotten about reading a long-ish book is the simple pleasure of looking forward to hopping into bed and spending an hour or two with it and the prospect of repeating that routine for however many nights to come.

Today is about β€œThe Birds” by Tarjei Vesaas, an absolutely beautiful 1950s Norwegian novel which I loved. My life is so much better for having read it. My care of patients has been dramatically improved by having read it. Thank you to Ruth Maxey for joining me today to talk about it
