Read up on the Darien venture - hint, it was deliberately "doomed." That "Union" was the result of Scotland's colony in Panama being fucked over by the King of England (who also happened to be the King of Scotland, but it clearly didn't matter) so, yeah, most of Scotland were unwilling participants.

Not gonna lie, I was hoping "cwtches" was a typo and there were going to be "witches" but I looked it up and cwtches sounds great.

But I don't like their comparison to steel, because the steel industry was torn apart causing huge damage (which, to many, was the point) to working class communities. Also, I wish we could move away from "but it makes money" because it only strengthens the belief that there's no value beyond money.

Yeah, it's about ideology. The government doesn't care about the economy beyond its use as a weapon. If they wanted to boost the economy, and they know this, they would put more money into the hands of poorer people. When they stopped the UC "uplift" it was purely to hurt people they don't like.
