You usually put the most detail in the focus areas. Low-detail areas act like the out-of-focus parts in a photo.

In this piece, the face was more important than the hair, so the hair was pushed back using value and less finish.

Start with the big shapes, then move to smaller details. Block in your shadow shapes and get the proportions right before adding the tiny, specific stuff.

That helps you avoid bad proportions and wasting time on areas that don’t really matter.
