Hey #rstats, #pydata, #julialang & #dataviz folks! 😊

What are some iconic data visualizations, similar to @edhawkins.orgβ€˜s warming strips & climate spiral?

Just chiming in to say this is related to a thought I've been having about how prompts are an extreme version of parameterization, where there are so many ways to express a prompt (each word and combination a parameter) that it's not obvious how changing it affects the outcome

International recognition of European Union β€œactorness”: Language-based evidence from United Nations general debate speeches 1970–2020 The European Union is often portrayed as a global actor that is said to wield β€˜economic’ or even β€˜normative’ power. Such perspectives presume that states in the international system recognize EU β€˜a...

➑️ Bottom line: Recognition of EU actorness is hardly global and rather mirrors power and value-based conflicts in the international system.

But when non-EU states do recognize EU actorness, it follows relatively clear patterns: πŸ“ Geographical proximity; πŸ’Ό Trade dependence; ❌ Less likely among great powers and autocratic regimes.

Recognition mostly occurs in economic contextsβ€”rarely in security, and especially hardly in relation to democracy or liberal values. And: recognition is largely driven by EU member states themselves. External recognition is rareβ€”less than 12% of all speeches.

Key findings: EU actorness is frequently recognizedβ€”more so than for many international organizations (with the #AfricanUnion as an exception) or even states.

πŸ€” The #EU πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί aspires to be a global actor 🌍 β€” but do other states recognize it as such?

Why Clarity Feels Dangerous (Especially If You’re an Academic) The Hardest Work in Writing Is Saying What You Really Mean

George Orwell warned: bad writing leads to bad thinking.

Academia trains us to write for journals, not the public.
Clarity feels risky, because it exposes us.

But clear communication is essential for democracy.
So how do we do it?
