Democracy is just the system of having representatives for the people who are elected, and this I don't think that democracy and socialism are incompatible any more than socialism and autocracy or ethnonationalism are incompatible.

Just because what we live in right now is somewhere between oligarchy and autocracy, not that democracy isn't real or a form of government.

Capitalist democracy will probably always tend toward oligarchy, and in any form of government conservatives will try to push it toward autocracy or fascism.

That's exactly what big tent means to them.

"we're going to embrace the other side trying to kill you and say we aren't trying to kill you, therefore we're your only choice. But we're also going to invite in and support materially the people who do want to kill you."

They're trying to create a big tent, though, by talking out of both sides of their mouth. e.g. we support trans people but we also think that people have legitimate concerns about them.

Appealing to both sides ends up making the "largest tent" that no one wants to be in.
